Recent advances in software and radiological imagining have opened the way to development of a new treatment modality called conformal radiotherapy. This relies upon three dimensional planning capabilities that offer advantages over conventional methods. As it is now possible to visualise the part of the body to be treated in three dimensions, tumours can now be identified with greater precision and detail and the technical aspects of treatment planning have been improved.
Conformal radiotherapy concentrates the radiation in the treatment area and spares the normal surrounding tissues. The treatment is more efficacious with fewer side effects and complications and a better quality of life for the patient. Cure rates are increased due to the fact that higher doses can be applied to the tumour area without a corresponding increase in side effects.
